Five Steps to Starting a Drone Business in Canada

Commercial drone work in Canada is increasing every day and more and more people are interested in starting a business, whether as a side project, or as a way out of their current career.

Here are five steps to get your UAV business off the ground:

1. Become a legal business

This process varies province to province, but basically if you operate under a different name than your own you need to register it as a business.

Visit to get started.

2. Attend Ground School

There are a few options to choose from, but resist the temptation to choose the cheapest option without checking out the competition. Not all ground schools are created equal, so make sure they teach the requirements laid out by Transport Canada here.

Consider this: a Private Pilot's License requires an eighty (80) hour Ground School to cover the required information. How are you going to learn it all in a three day (or shorter) course?

Tier 1 UAV Systems teaches to the Transport Canada TP15263 Standard. Take a look at our training options for more details.

3. Buy a UAV

New options hit the market every day. Consider your intended use, payload requirements, endurance, budget, and its ability to grow with your business.

You may want to buy an inexpensive drone to learn on before sinking all of your money into something you may crash on day one. Flight lessons can also be a great way to learn how to handle your new investment.

4. Buy UAV Insurance

UAV’s are not covered by the General Liability Insurance for your business. You need to ask your broker or agent specifically or UAV insurance, which is a form of aircraft insurance.

You need at least $500 000 in liability insurance to comply with your Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC). You may also want to consider insurance to cover your UAV during operations and on the ground (hull insurance).

5. Apply for a SFOC

This process may take you awhile to prepare, and don’t be discouraged if it gets sent back for rewrites. The staff at Transport Canada will help point you in the right direction.

For a detailed look at how to prepare your SFOC read our guide here.
